Mo Shaik, a former underground intelligence agent and a close ally of President Jacob Zuma, will head the country’s secret service, South Africa’s intelligence minister, Siyabonga Cwele, announced Friday. Mr. Shaik, who has served in several government intelligence and domestic posts, worked in the intelligence section of the apartheid-era African National Congress, headed by Mr. Zuma. The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, called the appointment inappropriate and said Mr. Shaik was “hopelessly partisan.” Mr. Shaik’s brother, Schabir, a former business adviser to the president, was convicted of bribery and fraud in 2005. Mr. Zuma was implicated in the case, and it nearly cost him his chances of becoming president.
